At least once per month in July-March, LWV VI produces virtual programs ( Zoom) on a Saturday morning with key officials as invited guests to speak on topics of significance to residents of the Territory. The Q & A following the presentation allows viewers to gain even more information.  Announcements and links for the programs are sent by email to membership and friends of the League 2-3 weeks in advance of each seminar. In election years, the Sessions are not presented in the summer months, as the League focuses on preparing for its television forums “Meet the Candidates”  on WTJX TV  aired in September through election day.

Delegate Stacey Plaskett was our special guest for the July Saturday Session.  She presented a Power Point overview of her work on behalf of the Territory and the US in general.  Of specific note was her work for the success of the Rum Cover-Over.  She shared that success with the Governor and other community leaders who contributed to making the case for Congress to provide the amount returned to the Territory to its previous level.  This will come into effect in December. She was also successful in joining with key local voices to convince the Trump administration to remove the high tariffs being levied on cargo ships having Chinese hulls, the very type of barges on which USVI importers are dependent. Delegate Plaskett listed the influential congressional committees of which she is a member and often the ranking member, based on her seniority. She used these successes to underscore her collaborative work with individuals from “both sides of the aisle” for the benefit of the people of the VI and the US.

 Following a lively Question and Answer period, the successful and well attended Session was closed.  President Moolenaar of the LWV VI thanked Delegate Plaskett for spending her Saturday morning with the League and friends to bring us all up to date with her work on behalf of her constituents and the US.  Moolenaar further explained that there would be no Saturday Session in August, as many members travel during that month.  Additionally, depending on the weather in September (the “hurricane month” for the Territory), there may or may not be a Session scheduled until October.  Check with the LWV VI website for future announcements.
